How to write and record a song in 60 minutes

So… you want to write a song in an hour? You’ve found the perfect place!

Feeling stuck? Haven’t written a song before and don’t know how/where to start? Here are some tips for you to work on before your session!

Step one: Song seeds

Where do we start in the songwriting process? Typically, it’s super helpful to pick a song seed! A song seed is any idea to use as a sense of direction to create the mood and ambience of the song. This could be a word, melody you’ve been jamming to, chord sequence, or anything that has happened that you feel inclined to write about.

Let's talk lyrics:

It’s important to have some clarity and direction in what you’re writing. This can derive directly from the song seed! Choosing the subject matter that you have recently experienced is the best and easiest way to start, you can use imagery and metaphors consistent with the subject to help depict what you’re trying to say. This can also aid in others interpreting your music in their own way!

What about chords?

Again, it all links back to the song seed! Pick a chord progression that moves with the narrative of your song, minor linking more toward a sadder emotion, major going with a happier tune, you get the picture. If you’re struggling with the chords or don’t play any instruments, no need to stress! Our mentors will aid you in navigating which ones to use and help you play them!

Once you have a little idea of what you're going for you can jump in the studio and hear your song come to life with one of our producer mentors!

You can start a song or have an idea of what you want to write, bring it into The Artist Studio, work closely with one of our top tier production mentors, and in 60 minutes… have a song!
